Career Background

Warren Groves has an extensive and diverse career journey spanning multiple industries, culminating in senior leadership roles.

He began his career with foundational roles in a legal firm, insurance brokerage, and the State Electricity Commission of Victoria, before embarking on a 26-year tenure with Victoria Police.

Rising through the ranks to Senior Sergeant, Warren managed multiple police stations in rural Victoria. “It was a fulfilling yet demanding role,” Warren shared, noting the high-stakes nature of the job and its impact on his personal life.

After almost three decades with Victoria Police, Warren sought a new professional chapter that offered both stability and the opportunity to leverage his extensive leadership and compliance experience.

A chance discussion led him to local government, where he transitioned to a compliance manager role before eventually becoming the General Manager of the Flinders Council.

This move not only provided a better work-life balance but also offered new challenges.

“It gave me a new lease on life. I went from worrying about whether anyone was going to get killed or injured, to whether someone might write nasty words to me,” Warren quipped, reflecting on the reduced pressure and more community-focused nature of his new responsibilities.

Professional Credibility & Personal Validation

Despite his extensive experience and significant responsibilities, Warren often felt the absence of formal qualifications weighed against his credibility.

“You grow to believe that your skills are not transferable,” he shared, reflecting on the difficulty of transitioning out of policing.

He admitted that this lack of academic credentials occasionally led to imposter syndrome.

“It’s frustrating when you may well be the most experienced person in the room, but you don’t necessarily have the qualifications that others have,” he said.

Warren also recognised that his police qualifications had limited transferability beyond law enforcement, further complicating his career transitions. “I had a Diploma of Police Supervision, but outside of the organisation, it was largely irrelevant,” he explained.

Discovery of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

While exploring options to study an Advanced Diploma of Government, Warren discovered the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process through Churchill Education.

Sceptical at first, he conducted extensive research to ensure its legitimacy. “I thought, this can’t be right. It seemed too good to be true,” he admitted.

After reviewing Churchill’s website, reading positive reviews, and checking their track record, Warren made the call that would change his professional trajectory.

The RPL Experience

Warren’s RPL process required him to compile documentation and evidence to validate his extensive professional experience.

While the process took time, he found it manageable. “It took me a couple of weekends to dig it all out, but it was worth it,” he said.

Warren appreciated Churchill Education’s support, describing the experience as “seamless and highly supported all the way.”

The process culminated in Warren achieving BSB80320 Graduate Diploma of Strategic Leadership and BSB60120 Advanced Diploma of Business.

“To see my skills formally recognised on paper was amazing. It felt like a weight had been lifted.” He admitted, “I wish I had known about this earlier in my career. It could have made such a difference much sooner.”

Impact of RPL

The impact of obtaining these qualifications was profound:

  • Personal Validation: Warren felt vindicated and proud. “It’s amazing to see my skill level down on paper,” he said. The qualifications provided a tangible representation of his expertise and alleviated feelings of insufficiency. “It’s like the impostor syndrome has been lifted,” he added.
  • Professional Credibility: The qualifications enhanced Warren’s professional profile, aligning his credentials with his executive responsibilities. “People can look at my LinkedIn and see that I have qualifications commensurate with my role,” he said. Additionally, these qualifications opened doors to further recognition. “Since graduating, I am now an associate of the Governance Institute of Australia, he shared.
  • Career Progression: While Warren remains committed to his current role, the qualifications provide a foundation for future opportunities. “I’m still thinking about doing PSP60122 Advanced Diploma of Government (through RPL) to further the diversity and level of my skills recognition,” he said

Advice For Others

Warren strongly advocates for RPL, particularly those looking to formalise their professional experience or transition into a new industry.

“Don’t hesitate to start the process,” he advised. “The longer you wait, the more you risk losing the relevance of your experience.”

This is an important point to note. Because the RPL process needs to prove ‘currency’ of capabilities, only experience from your last five years can be taken into account. Which is why keeping your RPL up-to-date is so important.

He highlighted the support provided by Churchill Education as a key factor in his positive experience.

“The team at Churchill is incredible. They guide you through every step, making the process straightforward and reassuring.”

For those unsure about RPL, Warren recommended conducting due diligence as he did but ultimately trusting the process.

“It’s about recognising your worth and taking a step forward for yourself.”
